Trees are a valuable asset to any property. They provide shade, improve air quality, and add beauty to your landscape. These lovely additions to your property require care and maintenance to stay healthy and thrive.
That’s where an arborist comes in.
Arborists are trained professionals who specialize in the care and maintenance of trees. Whether you’re looking to prune a few branches, diagnose a problem, or remove a tree entirely, hiring the right arborist is essential to ensure the job is done safely and correctly.
But with so many options out there, how do you know which arborist is right for your needs? Here are the key things to look for when choosing an arborist for your tree care needs.

1. Certification and Qualifications
One of the most important factors to consider when hiring an arborist is their certification and qualifications. A certified arborist has been trained to understand tree biology, care practices, and proper techniques. They are also required to pass exams and demonstrate experience in the field.
- ISA Certification: The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) offers certification programs for arborists. ISA-certified arborists have passed rigorous exams and are required to stay updated with continuing education. ISA certification indicates that the arborist is knowledgeable and committed to best practices.
- New Jersey State or Local Certification: Arborists are required to hold state and local licenses. Be sure to check if these are required in your region.
2. Experience and Expertise
Fast and clean service
“Reliable is great. We just had a tree removed in our backyard. They were reliable, fast, and very clean.”

Superb tree service
“I can’t say enough about Ed and Reliable. I won’t call anybody else in the future. Reliable was responsive, the price was better than fair and the work was superb (and clean). We had a large half dead black cherry tree that was in need of major pruning, massive branch removals, two small tree removals (in between the two trees you see in the pics), and removal of a massive nest of vines that was essentially engulfing all 4 trees that had existed in that space (2 dead trees, 2 alive) and was choking out the two trees that were “alive.” Reliable removed the two dead trees, all the vines, substantially pruned both remaining trees and cut off 4 large hazardous (massive) branches on the large tree that were essentially growing horizontal. I haven’t taken the time to leave a lot of contractor reviews …. Don’t call anybody else.”

Repeat customers for removals and trimming
“This is the second service I’ve had Reliable Tree out to do on our property. Last year, they came out to remove 3 trees which were in the way of work that we were having done to our home. Prompt, professional, reasonable and left me completely satisfied with the end result. This week they came out to remove some trees that were dead/dying/leaning as well as to trim all of the trees on our property (and I can tell you that we have a LOT of trees!). The finished product is amazing. They showed up on time and spent the entire day. The trees were down and stumps ground lickety split and the rest of the day was spent on the trimming. They left the property looking amazing and clean. I will be using them for all of my tree needs from now on. No need to call anyone else!”

Reasonable tree removals
“We had this company take a tree out of our backyard and the men who came to do the job were very professional and very respectful I would recommended them to anyone who needs any work done and very reasonable.”

Professional tree trimming experts
“Used them to trim a large evergreen in the middle of Jersey City and they did a great job. They arrived 30 minutes early (good job on that alone) did the work and cleaned up in two hours flat. I could not find one single needle in my back patio. Great job and very professional. Rates were also reasonable. I have already recommended them to neighbors.”

Large, complex job done well at a great price
“They provided an excellent level of service at a very good price. They were prompt and did the work carefully and quickly without damaging other plants and bushes on our property. When one scheduled date was rained out, they set another date within a week and paid the cost for the additional parking permits our city requires. We would definitely use them again. We needed four trees removed from our backyard and one from the front yard. One of the trees was a very large hardwood tree, which started to fall over during a recent storm and could not be saved. Our house is very close to other houses, with phone and electrical wires in the way of some tree branches. This was a very large, complex job.”

Professional, pleasant, thriving maple tree
We hired Reliable Tree Service after our 50+ foot oak tree died and had to be removed and we wanted to plant another tree in the same spot. Ed was so professional, knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. We now have a healthy red maple that is thriving where our oak tree was. Ed even stopped by to check on our tree without being asked when this most recent drought occurred and left us a note to reassure us the tree was doing well. I would highly recommend Reliable Tree Service!!! 👍🏻

Repeat business in Hoboken
Professional, efficient, and amazing. I have had the pleasure of knowing and watching these guys work for many years while working for the City of Hoboken where I first meet them. Since then they have come to my house several times . Two removals, two stump grinding, and each time perfection! Several tree trimmings all done with ease because of their knowledge and professionalism . I recommend 6 ****** stars.

Great business referral, helping other landscapers
The crew worked great together. They carried out my exact idea of what I wanted done. They were very protective of my plantings under and around the tree. As well as the fence and my neighbors house. Clean up was excellent

While certifications are important, experience counts for a lot in the tree care industry. Look for an arborist with a proven track record. Whether it’s tree trimming, removal, or pest control, an experienced arborist is more likely to handle issues efficiently and with the right technique.
Ask for references from past clients or check online reviews. Real-world feedback can give you insight into an arborist’s reliability, professionalism, and quality of work.

3. Safety and Insurance
Tree care can be dangerous, especially when working with large or overgrown trees. A good arborist will prioritize safety for both themselves and your property. Before hiring, ensure that the arborist follows strict safety protocols and has the necessary equipment to do the job safely.
- Insurance: Always ask if the arborist has liability insurance and worker’s compensation coverage. If an arborist is injured on your property or causes damage, you want to be sure you’re not held responsible for any costs.
- Safety Gear: A reputable arborist will use the proper safety gear, including helmets, harnesses, and protective clothing, to ensure that they’re working safely at heights and handling equipment responsibly.

4. Clear Communication and Estimates
The best arborists understand that clear communication ensures a successful project. They should be able to clearly explain the work that needs to be done, why it’s necessary, and how they plan to do it.
- Written Estimates: A good arborist will provide a detailed, written estimate that outlines the scope of the project, the methods they will use, the estimated time frame, and the costs involved. Be wary of arborists who give vague or overly simplistic estimates without breaking down the details.
- Open Dialogue: The arborist should be willing to answer any questions you have and be transparent about their recommendations. They should explain any potential risks or complications associated with the work.

5. Proper Equipment
Tree care requires specialized equipment, such as chainsaws, stump grinders, aerial lifts, and ropes. An arborist should have access to high-quality, well-maintained equipment that allows them to complete the job safely and efficiently.
- State-of-the-Art Tools: Check that the arborist is using modern, well-maintained tools. This will not only ensure the job is done properly but also minimize the risk of damage to your trees or property.
- Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance: Ask if the arborist’s vehicles and equipment are properly maintained. A professional will invest in equipment that ensures the job is completed with precision and safety.

6. Affordability
While price shouldn’t be the only factor in your decision, it’s still important to consider your budget.
- Fair Pricing: A good arborist will offer a fair price for the work, balancing quality and value. They should be able to explain their pricing structure clearly and provide you with a written agreement.
- Avoiding Unnecessary Work: Beware of arborists who try to upsell you on services you don’t need. A trustworthy arborist will only recommend necessary work to improve the health and safety of your trees.
